The Data Is In: Working Candidates Get Hired Faster

Why Searching While Employed Often Gets Better Results

“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” — Henry David Thoreau

So, who’s got the advantage —someone juggling their current job while interviewing, or someone with all the time in the world to focus on finding the next one?

If you guessed “obvious answer,” think again. The 2025 market has a lot of layers, and they don’t always stack the way you expect.

In Part 1, we’re talking about what you can control —mindset, behavior, and the way you manage your search. Part 2 digs into the forces you can’t control, and how to work around them like a pro.

Labor Market Remix: What’s Really Happening in 2025

  • Unemployment: 4.2%
  • Job Openings: 7.7 million
  • Unemployed Workers: 7 million

On paper it works. In practice… not so much.

  • Long-term unemployment —people out of work for 27+ weeks —is back up to 1.8 million, the highest we’ve seen outside the pandemic.
  • The median jobless stretch now sits at 10.2 weeks. That’s not “forever,” but it’s plenty long enough to test your patience and wreck your budget.
  • Continued unemployment claims are at 1.97 million, the most since late 2021, which means getting back in is taking longer for a lot of people.
  • Hiring is cautious. In this “low-hire, low-fire” economy, employers keep who they have —and take their sweet time adding anyone new.

Employed? Congrats, You’re More Likely to Get an Offer.

Federal Reserve research shows it plainly: having a job makes you about three times more likely to get the offer.

That’s not because you’re magically more talented. It’s because being employed means hiring managers often see you as:

  • Lower risk
  • Actively successful in your current role
  • More up-to-date in skills and market knowledge

Fair? Not always. But perception drives decisions, and in this game, perception is literally currency.

The Five Job Search Power Moves

If job searching were an Olympic sport, these would be your gold-medal skills.

  • Focus – Zero in on what you want. Random applications are a recipe for random results.
  • Commitment24 weeks is average. The more you show up, the sooner you’ll beat it.
  • Dedication – Conversations, follow-ups, networking —they all count. Stack enough of them and doors start opening.
  • Sacrifice – Trade a little comfort now for a bigger win later.
  • Resilience – Ghosted? Rejected? Keep going. Every “no” gets you closer to a “yes.”

When It’s Urgent vs. When It’s Optional

If you’re unemployed, you’re in “go mode” whether you like it or not. That can be a superpower… or a quick route to burnout.

If you’re employed, you’re in “options mode.” You can afford to be choosy —but don’t let comfort slow you down.

Either way, urgency without focus wastes time. Focus without action is just… a Pinterest board.

You need both.

Coming Up in Part 2

We’ll dig into the structural biases baked into the market, how AI is changing hiring dynamics, and what unemployed candidates can do to flip the script in their favor.

Spoiler: We have plays that work.

💡 Bottom line: The people who win in 2025’s job market are the ones who search with intention. If that sounds like you—or like who you want to be—let’s talk. Schedule an intro call with an ECP Regional Director today, and let’s #GetHiredFaster.
